Mechanic

Position: Mechanic / Welder

Supervised by: Shop Manager

Job Summary:

Under direction, performs skilled welding in the repair, modification, and fabrication of equipment, all vehicles and facilities.  Work is performed all shop facilities and in the field when breakdowns occur. General supervision is received from the Welding Manager and employee is expected to exercise initiative and independence in planning and organizing work.  Work includes fabrication projects requiring the ability to read blueprints and interpret drawings and requires the incumbent to have the ability to estimate labor and material for said projects. Mechanical responsibilities for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fleet trucks/equipment. 

Responsibilities of the position are: 

  • Repairs equipment and machinery; prepares orders lists; records materials used and time spent.
  • Performs metal and/or fiberglass body damage repairs to vehicles, machinery and equipment.
  • Performs all types of arc and oxyacetylene cutting and welding, including stick and wire feed on all types of metals, in all welding positions.
  • Performs hard facing with electric arc on various metals.
  • Layouts and fabricates all types of structures and equipment.
  • Performs safely and effectively welding on all types of light and heavy equipment, both in a shop and a field repair environment.
  • Utilizes a machinist lath, press and other related equipment.
  • Utilizes blue prints, plans, and/or sketches.
  • Fabricates and installs various wear parts on machinery and equipment.
  • Orders and maintains adequate and proper inventory supplies.
  • A team player that helps the organization meet its objectives.
  • Effectively carries out oral and written instructions
  • Takes initiative to meet work objectives
  • Provide tools to perform light mechanical repairs

Knowledge and skilled in:

  • Proper use and care of mechanical, machinist, and welding specialized equipment proper use and care of mechanical and welding repair tools and equipment and the associated occupational hazards of the welding/machinist profession.
  • Characteristics of ferrous and non-ferrous metals under welding and heat treatment conditions.
  • Correctly diagnose problems in equipment and machinery; and safely, skillfully and successfully perform repair work on such machinery and equipment.
  • Perform heavy lifting and prolonged physical labor.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
  • Perform all modes of welding with various equipment.
  • Work independently with limited supervision.
  • Work intricately with other employees.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Perform moderate machinist duties.

Qualifications:

Four (4) years journey level welding/machinist trade experience, including work experience with heavy trucks and equipment -or- completion of a recognized welder apprenticeship program or an equivalent training school/program

Welders must have the knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and standard practices used in light and heavy equipment maintenance and fabrication.  Ability to perform arc and oxy-acetylene welding as well as other types of welds as needed.

  • Ability to acquire or have all needed welding certifications
  • Must possess the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License

Environment:

Working conditions include exposure to all types of weather conditions, dust, oil, chemicals, fumes and noise. Lifting ability in excess of 75 pounds is required. Working conditions are normal for a shop environment.  This position also includes exposure to noise, dust, grease, vibrations, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.  Machinery and tool operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hardhats/bump caps. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
